Definition of Daylighting as it relates to Architecture, Sustainable Architecture, Living Building Challenge

Sustainable Construction Materials refer to materials used in architecture and sustainable architecture that have minimal environmental impact, conserve natural resources, and contribute to energy efficiency. These materials can be derived from renewable sources, reclaimed or recycled waste products, or engineered to have low embodied energy and carbon footprint. Examples include straw bale, bamboo, rammed earth, mycelium composites, recycled concrete and glass, and insulation made from recycled denim or cellulose. Sustainable construction materials also encompass systems such as greywater recycling, which reuses water from sinks, showers, and washing machines for irrigation or toilet flushing, reducing potable water consumption and stormwater runoff. By prioritizing the use of sustainable construction materials and systems, architects and builders can create healthier, more resilient buildings and communities that align with principles of ecological stewardship and social equity.
