Chinchillas

Definition of Chinchillas as it relates to Animals, Zoo Animals, Rodents

Chinchillas are small, rodent-like animals native to the Andes mountains in South America. They have thick, soft fur that is highly prized and they are often kept as exotic pets. In the wild, chinchillas live in rocky, mountainous areas where they can escape from predators by seeking shelter in crevices and burrows. They are primarily nocturnal animals, but they may also be active during the day. Chinchillas have a unique method of grooming themselves, called "fur-slipping," in which they rub their fur against rough surfaces to remove dirt and loose hair. They are also known for their ability to jump great distances relative to their size. In zoos, chinchillas can be found in exhibits that mimic their natural mountainous habitat, and visitors may be able to observe them engaging in their natural behaviors such as jumping, grooming, and socializing with one another.
