Tortoises

Definition of Tortoises as it relates to Animals, Reptiles, Venomous Reptiles

Tortoises are a type of slow-moving reptile known for their distinctive, dome-shaped shells and strong, elephant-like feet. They are primarily herbivores, feeding on a diet of plants, fruits, and vegetables. Unlike turtles, which live in both fresh and saltwater environments, tortoises are strictly land-dwellers. While most species are not venomous, some, like the deadly puff adder, possess venom glands to subdue prey. Tortoises can be found all over the world, with the largest concentration living in Africa and Asia. They vary greatly in size, from small species that weigh just a few pounds to giant tortoises that can tip the scales at over 500 pounds. Many tortoise species are endangered due to habitat loss, hunting, and other human activities.
