Definition of Reptiles as it relates to Animals, Birds, Animal Types

Reptiles are a diverse group of cold-blooded, scaly animals that include snakes, lizards, turtles, crocodilians, and tuataras. They are characterized by their ability to lay eggs on land, as well as their dry, watertight skin, which helps them to retain moisture. Reptiles are found on every continent except Antarctica and can be found in a wide variety of habitats, from deserts and forests to grasslands and bodies of water. They play an important role in the ecosystem by controlling insect populations and serving as prey for larger animals. Many species of reptiles are also kept as pets and are popular in the exotic pet trade.
