Spirituals

Spirituals are a genre of songs that originated in African American communities in the southern United States during the time of slavery. These songs were typically religious in nature and were often sung as a form of expression, comfort, and strength in the face of oppression. Spirituals are characterized by their powerful lyrics, soulful melodies, and call-and-response format. Many spirituals have roots in African musical traditions and incorporate elements of rhythm, improvisation, and vocal harmony. Today, spirituals continue to be performed and celebrated as a significant part of African American musical heritage.
