Spanish Colonial California Mission
Spanish Colonial California Missions were religious outposts established by Spanish colonizers in the 18th and 19th centuries in what is now the state of California. These missions were established with the goals of converting Native Americans to Christianity, as well as to expand Spanish influence and control in the region. The missions typically consisted of a church, living quarters for priests and other staff, workshops, and agricultural fields. The missions played a central role in the colonization and development of California, and many of them still exist today as historic sites.
