Rough Legged Hawk
The Rough Legged Hawk, scientifically known as Buteo lagopus, is a large bird of prey belonging to the Buteo genus. It is easily recognized by its distinctive feathered legs that extend down to its talons, giving it a rough-legged appearance. This raptor has a wingspan of up to 55 inches and can be found in open habitats such as grasslands, marshes, and tundra. The Rough Legged Hawk primarily feeds on small mammals like rodents, birds, and occasionally insects. Its plumage varies in color from dark to light morphs, with dark markings on its belly and underwings. During the breeding season, these hawks build nests on cliffs or in trees, laying eggs that hatch into fluffy white chicks. This species is known for its hovering hunting technique, where it hangs in the air while searching for prey before swooping down to catch it with its sharp talons.
