Ocean Trenches
Ocean trenches are long, narrow, steep-sided depressions in the ocean floor. These features are formed by the subduction of tectonic plates, where one plate slides beneath another, causing the seafloor to buckle and create deep troughs. Ocean trenches are some of the deepest parts of the ocean, with depths reaching over 36,000 feet (11,000 meters) in the Mariana Trench, the deepest known ocean trench. These environments are characterized by high pressure, extreme darkness, and unique ecosystems adapted to the harsh conditions. Ocean trenches play a crucial role in the Earth's geology and are important sites for scientific research to study plate tectonics, seafloor spreading, and deep-sea life.
