Jim Crow Laws
Jim Crow Laws were state and local laws in the United States that enforced racial segregation and discrimination against African Americans. These laws were enacted in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and mandated separate facilities for whites and blacks in public spaces such as schools, parks, restaurants, and public transportation. Jim Crow Laws also restricted African Americans' voting rights, access to jobs, and ability to participate in society on an equal basis with white Americans. The laws were eventually declared unconstitutional by the Supreme Court in the mid-20th century, but their effects continued to be felt for many years.
