Islamic Fasting

Islamic Fasting refers to the act of abstaining from food, drink, smoking, and impure thoughts from dawn until sunset during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan. Muslims engage in fasting as a way to purify the soul, practice self-discipline, and empathize with those who are less fortunate. Fasting is one of the Five Pillars of Islam and is mandatory for all adult Muslims, with exceptions for pregnant or nursing women, travelers, the elderly, and those who are ill. The fasting period ends each day with the iftar meal, which is typically eaten with family and friends to celebrate the breaking of the fast.
