Intendants
Intendants were royal officials in France during the 17th and 18th centuries who were responsible for overseeing the administration and finances of a particular region or province. They were appointed by the king and held significant power and authority in their respective territories. Intendants played a key role in enforcing royal policies, collecting taxes, maintaining law and order, and promoting economic development.
