Down Syndrome

Definition of Down Syndrome as it relates to Science, Life Science, Cellular Biology, Cellular Biology Genetics, Chromosomal Abnormalities

Down Syndrome is a genetic disorder caused by the presence of all or part of a third copy of chromosome 21. It is characterized by physical growth delays, distinctive facial features, and mild to moderate intellectual disability. This condition affects approximately 1 in every 700 births globally and occurs in people of all races and economic levels. In terms of its fit within the hierarchy, Down Syndrome falls under the broader category of Chromosomal Abnormalities, which is a subfield of Cellular Biology Genetics, itself a branch of Cellular Biology, which in turn is a subset of Life Science, all of which are contained within the larger field of Science.
