Mitochondria, often referred to as the "powerhouse" of the cell, are specialized organelles found in eukaryotic cells. They play a crucial role in generating energy for the cell through a process called cellular respiration, where they convert biochemical energy from nutrients into ATP (adenosine triphosphate), the primary energy currency of the cell. Mitochondria are also involved in various other cellular processes such as apoptosis (programmed cell death), calcium homeostasis, and the synthesis of certain amino acids, lipids and heme groups. They have their own DNA, distinct from the nuclear DNA, which encodes a subset of mitochondrial proteins. Mitochondria are dynamic organelles that can change shape, divide and fuse with each other, and move around within the cell. Their number and distribution within a cell can vary depending on the energy demands of the cell and its stage of development.
