Hangul Script

Definition of Hangul Script as it relates to Languages, Korean, East Asian Language, Hangul

Hangul Script refers to the alphabetic system used in the Korean language. It is an East Asian writing system, consisting of 14 basic consonants and 10 basic vowels. These letters are combined into syllable blocks, with each block representing a distinct sound. The script was created during the 15th century by King Sejong the Great and his scholars to promote literacy among the common people, as the previous Chinese characters were difficult for the majority of Koreans to learn. Today, Hangul is used widely in North and South Korea and is recognized as one of the most efficient and scientific writing systems in the world. As a part of the Korean language, it is deeply intertwined with the culture, history, and identity of the Korean people.
