Definition of Radicals as it relates to Languages, Chinese, Chinese Characters, Mandarin Chinese

Radicals, in the context of Mandarin Chinese, are the basic building blocks used to form Chinese characters. They can be compared to the roots of words in English and other languages. Each radical carries its own meaning and can often provide clues as to the meaning or pronunciation of a character. In the hierarchy of Languages/Chinese/Chinese Characters/Mandarin Chinese, radials fall under Mandarin Chinese and are a component of Chinese characters which themselves are a part of the Chinese language. They serve as a fundamental unit in the organization and understanding of Chinese characters.
