Arctic hare, also known as the polar rabbit, is a species of lagomorph adapted to survive in the harsh, frigid conditions of the Tundra biome. They have thick, white fur which provides excellent camouflage against predators and helps insulate them from the cold. Their ears are shorter than those of other hares, reducing heat loss. In summer, their coat turns grayish brown. These animals possess an extraordinary ability to withstand extreme temperatures as low as -50°C (-58°F). They have large hind limbs that enable them to move swiftly through snow, making it easier for them to escape predators and find food. During winter months, their diet mainly consists of willow, birch bark, and woody shrubs; while in summer, they feed on grasses, leaves, berries, and flowers. Arctic hares live in large groups or colonies that can number up to several hundred individuals. These social creatures have complex hierarchical structures within their communities with dominant males holding territories containing several females and young ones. This species plays a vital role in the Tundra ecosystem by serving as both prey and predator. As herbivores, they help control vegetation populations; as food sources, they sustain numerous carnivores and scavengers. Their presence contributes significantly to maintaining the balance of life in this unique biome.
