Can Bus

Definition of Can Bus as it relates to Electronics, Computers, Controller Area Network, Controller Area Network Bus

A Can Bus, short for Controller Area Network Bus, is a robust vehicle bus standard designed to allow microcontrollers and devices to communicate with each other in applications without a host computer. It is a high-integrity, high-speed network that provides low-cost, efficient communication between control units. Developed by Bosch in 1983, Can Bus is now widely used in automotive and industrial applications such as automobiles, heavy equipment, maritime vessels, and aircraft. The Can Bus system enables a large number of microcontrollers and devices to communicate with each other without the need for a central computer, providing increased reliability, cost savings, and flexibility. It operates at speeds up to 1 Mbit/s and supports both broadcast and point-to-point communication. The Can Bus protocol is standardized in ISO 11898 and SAE J1939.
