Mineralogy

Definition of Mineralogy as it relates to Science, Chemistry, Geology

Mineralogy is the scientific study of minerals, their compositions, structures, properties, and occurrences. It is a fundamental branch of geology, closely interlinked with chemistry as it deals with the identification of minerals based on their chemical composition and physical properties. Mineralogists examine mineral samples in hand specimen and through various analytical techniques to determine their identity, classification, and genesis. The knowledge derived from mineralogy significantly contributes to our understanding of the Earth's interior, the formation of rocks, ore deposits, and the evolution of the planet.
