Shrines

Definition of Shrines as it relates to Religions, Shintoism, Temples

A shrine, in the context of Shintoism and Temples, is a sacred place where deities are believed to dwell. Often smaller and less ornate than temples, shrines serve as locations for offerings, prayers, and rituals to honor and communicate with kami, or spirits. They can be found both within temple complexes and as standalone structures throughout the landscape. Shrines typically feature a torii gate at the entrance, a cleansing station for visitors to purify themselves before entering, and a main hall where offerings are made and prayers are conducted. Despite their smaller size, shrines play an integral role in the spiritual practices of those who follow Shintoism and visit Temples.
