Definition of Underworld as it relates to Religions, Shintoism, Mythology

The Underworld, as a concept within Mythology and by extension Shintoism and Religions, refers to the realm of the dead or afterlife. It is often portrayed as a dark, gloomy place, ruled by a deity or spirit. The Underworld may also serve as a setting for heroic quests or journeys in mythological tales. In Shintoism, the Underworld is known as Yomi, and is believed to be the land of the dead, where souls go after death.
