Romance Languages

Definition of Romance Languages as it relates to Languages, Italian

Romance languages are a group of closely-related languages that evolved from Vulgar Latin, the language spoken by soldiers and settlers in the Roman Empire. They are called Romance languages because they all derive from Latin, the language of Rome. This family includes Italian, Spanish, French, Portuguese, Romanian, Catalan, and many others. The term "Romance" here has nothing to do with romantic love but is derived from the Latin word "Romanicus", meaning "of or relating to the Romans". Romance languages share a significant number of linguistic features such as grammar rules, verb conjugation patterns, vocabulary, and pronunciation. They also have cultural and historical connections through literature, art, music, and philosophy.
