Traditional Chinese
Traditional Chinese refers to a writing system and set of characters historically used in China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau. It is characterized by complex, intricate characters that have remained largely unchanged since their inception. In contrast to Simplified Chinese, which was introduced in mainland China during the mid-20th century as a means of increasing literacy rates, Traditional Chinese is used in regions where preservation of cultural heritage and historical continuity are highly valued. The language associated with Traditional Chinese shares many similarities with other varieties of Chinese, such as Mandarin, Cantonese, and Hokkien, but may differ in terms of vocabulary, pronunciation, and grammar. Overall, Traditional Chinese represents a rich cultural tradition that continues to be an important part of the Chinese-speaking world.
