Min Chinese, also known as Min Nan or Southern Min, is a branch of the Chinese language spoken primarily in the southeastern coastal provinces of Fujian and Taiwan, as well as in parts of Guangdong and Hainan. It is also spoken by overseas Chinese communities in Southeast Asia, such as in Singapore and Malaysia. Min Chinese has several mutually unintelligible dialects, including Amoy (Xiamen), Teochew (Chaozhou), and Hokkien. The language is characterized by its tonal system, with four to six tones depending on the dialect, and its use of final consonants, which is rare in other Chinese languages.
