Definition of Portuguese as it relates to Languages

Portuguese refers to the Romance language primarily spoken in Portugal and Brazil, as well as several African countries such as Angola, Mozambique, and Cape Verde. It is also spoken by significant communities in East Timor, Goa (India), and Macau. Portuguese originated from Latin in the Iberian Peninsula and has since evolved into various dialects and regional accents. It is a phonetic language, meaning that words are pronounced as they are spelled, with stress on the penultimate syllable in most cases. Portuguese is also the official language of several international organizations, including the European Union, Mercosur, and the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP).
