American Sign Language

Definition of American Sign Language as it relates to Languages

American Sign Language (ASL) is a visual language used by Deaf individuals and those with hearing loss in the United States and parts of Canada. It combines hand shapes, facial expressions, and body movements to convey meaning, grammar, and syntax. ASL has its own unique structure, vocabulary, and dialects, separate from spoken English. It is not a universal language, but rather one of many sign languages used worldwide. Learning ASL can provide access to communication for Deaf individuals and foster cultural understanding and inclusivity.
