The New York Yankees are a professional baseball team based in the Bronx, New York City. Established in 1901 as the Baltimore Orioles (not to be confused with the modern-day Baltimore Orioles), the team moved to New York in 1903 and was renamed the New York Highlanders before becoming the Yankees in 1913. The franchise is steeped in history, having won a record 27 World Series championships and 40 American League pennants. Yankee legends such as Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, and Derek Jeter have left an indelible mark on the sport. The team's home games are played at Yankee Stadium, which opened in 2009 and is the fourth stadium to bear the name. As part of Major League Baseball within the Sports Baseball History hierarchy, the New York Yankees represent a significant chapter in the evolution and success of American baseball.
