Geophysics

Definition of Geophysics as it relates to Science, Space Science, Natural Sciences

Geophysics is the study of the Earth's physical properties and processes, including its internal structure, composition, and dynamics. It encompasses a wide range of scientific disciplines, such as geodesy, seismology, geomagnetism, and volcanology, that investigate phenomena such as earthquakes, plate tectonics, magnetic fields, and the Earth's interior heat flow. Geophysicists use a variety of tools and techniques, including remote sensing, computational modeling, and field observations, to understand the complex interactions between the Earth's solid, liquid, and gaseous components. As a subfield of natural sciences, geophysics contributes to our understanding of the Earth as a system and helps us mitigate natural hazards, manage resources, and explore for energy and mineral deposits.
