Statistical Physics

Definition of Statistical Physics as it relates to Science, Physics, Computational Physics

Statistical physics is the application of probability theory, including statistics and stochastic processes, to physical systems. It involves the development and use of models and methods to describe and predict the collective behavior of a large number of particles, which can be atoms, molecules, or even larger structures. The computational aspect comes into play through the use of algorithms and simulations to analyze these complex systems. This field is closely related to thermodynamics, as it often deals with systems at or near equilibrium, but it also encompasses nonequilibrium phenomena. Statistical physics has wide-ranging applications in many areas of physics, including condensed matter physics, quantum mechanics, and biophysics. It provides a theoretical foundation for understanding a variety of physical phenomena, such as phase transitions, critical phenomena, and transport processes.
