Transcription

Definition of Transcription as it relates to Science, Genetics, Protein Synthesis

Transcription is the process by which the genetic information contained within DNA is copied into RNA, a molecule that serves as a template for protein synthesis. In this process, the enzyme RNA polymerase binds to the DNA template and creates an RNA copy through a series of steps including initiation, elongation, and termination. Transcription plays a crucial role in gene expression, allowing cells to produce specific proteins required for their function and survival. As a part of protein synthesis, transcription is closely linked with translation, the process by which ribosomes use RNA as a template to assemble amino acids into proteins. Together, transcription and translation form the central dogma of molecular biology, describing how genetic information flows from DNA to RNA to proteins, ultimately shaping the structure and function of all living organisms.
