It encompasses a wide range of literary forms including fiction, nonfiction, poetry, drama, and essays. The themes often include slavery, racism, identity, social justice, and the struggle for equality. This literature has been instrumental in preserving African American culture, history and identity as well as advocating for civil rights and social change. Notable authors of this genre include Maya Angelou, James Baldwin, Toni Morrison, and Richard Wright.
