Foster Care

Definition of Foster Care as it relates to Family, Step Family

Foster Care refers to a temporary living arrangement whereby a child, who cannot live with his/her biological parents due to abuse, neglect, abandonment or other family issues, is placed in the care of licensed adults known as foster parents. These foster parents provide a safe and nurturing environment for the child while social workers attempt to resolve the problems in the child's birth family. The goal of foster care is to reunite children with their biological families whenever possible. If reunification is not possible, foster parents may be considered as permanent guardians or adoptive parents for the child. Stepfamilies can also become involved in foster care when a stepparent decides to become a licensed foster parent. In such cases, the stepparent would undergo background checks and training to ensure they are capable of providing a safe and stable home environment for a foster child. Overall, foster care serves as a vital safety net for vulnerable children and provides them with the support and care they need during challenging times in their lives.
