Theological Studies

Definition of Theological Studies as it relates to Education, Religious Education, Spiritual Formation

Theological Studies is an academic discipline devoted to the critical investigation and interpretation of religious beliefs, practices, and texts within their historical, cultural, and philosophical contexts. It encompasses the study of God, revelation, faith, and ethics from various religious traditions, with a particular focus on Christianity. Theological studies seek to understand and articulate the nature and implications of religious truth claims, as well as their relevance for contemporary issues and challenges. In this regard, it integrates insights from philosophy, history, literature, sociology, and other fields in order to provide a comprehensive understanding of the religious phenomenon. As such, it is closely related to Religious Education and Spiritual Formation, which aim to facilitate the transmission and appropriation of religious knowledge and values, as well as personal transformation through encounters with the divine. Theological Studies thus serves as both an intellectual pursuit and a spiritual practice, fostering critical thinking, spiritual discernment, and moral wisdom in those who engage in it.
