Assessment in the context of education refers to the process of systematically gathering, analyzing and interpreting information about student learning outcomes, teaching methods and academic programs in order to improve the quality of instruction and facilitate student growth. In Physical Education, assessment is used to evaluate students' physical abilities, skills and knowledge in areas such as fitness, sportsmanship and teamwork. Physical Education Theory further informs these assessments by providing a framework for understanding how individuals learn motor skills, develop fitness habits and engage in physical activity. Assessment can take various forms including formal examinations, quizzes, observations, self-assessments, performance tasks and portfolios. The goal of assessment is to provide feedback to students, teachers and other stakeholders about student learning progress and inform instructional decisions that promote continuous improvement.
