Adapted Physical Education

Definition of Adapted Physical Education as it relates to Education, Physical Education, Motor Development

Adapted Physical Education (APE) refers to the specialized field of physical education that focuses on providing safe and effective instruction, adapted when necessary, to students with disabilities in order to promote their motor development and overall physical fitness. APE professionals assess each student's unique needs and abilities, then design and implement individualized programs that allow them to participate in physical activities and sports to the best of their abilities. The goal is to help these students develop physically, socially, emotionally, and cognitively, while fostering a lifelong appreciation for physical activity and healthy living. APE draws upon knowledge from various disciplines such as exercise science, special education, psychology, and motor development to provide evidence-based interventions that enhance the quality of life for individuals with disabilities.
