Phonics

Definition of Phonics as it relates to Education, English Education, English Language Learning

Phonics refers to a method of teaching reading and writing of the English language by developing learners' phonemic awareness, which is the ability to hear, identify, and manipulate individual sounds-phonemes-in spoken words. It emphasizes the correlation between these sounds and the letters or groups of letters in the English alphabet, known as graphemes. Phonics instruction often involves decoding, the process of applying phonics rules to read unfamiliar words, and encoding, the process of using phonics skills to spell words while writing. This approach is particularly beneficial for English language learners and beginning readers, as it provides a systematic and explicit way to master the complex English spelling system.
