Staffordshire Figures

Definition of Staffordshire Figures as it relates to Collectibles, Ceramic Collectibles, Victorian Ceramics

Satsuma Ware refers to a type of Japanese pottery originating from the Satsuma region in southern Kyushu, characterized by intricate and delicate designs painted over a milky-white glaze. Often adorned with elaborate gold accents, these ceramics showcase scenes inspired by nature, folklore, and daily life. The detailed patterns are applied through a technique called "yûsen", where the artist paints directly onto the unfired clay before it is glazed. This produces an iridescent quality that adds to its allure. The history of Satsuma Ware dates back to the late 16th century during Japan's Azuchi-Momoyama period, although it was not until the Meiji era (1868-1912) when this art form gained international recognition due to increased trade with the West. Today, Satsuma Ware remains highly sought after by collectors for its exquisite beauty and historical significance.
