Criminal Law: A body of laws that governs the behavior of individuals and entities in relation to criminal offenses, including the elements of crimes, available defenses, investigation and prosecution processes, sentencing guidelines, and appeals. It encompasses a wide range of illegal activities such as theft, fraud, assault, homicide, drug trafficking, and sexual offenses, among others. Criminal law defines the conduct that is considered criminal, establishes the penalties for committing those crimes, and provides procedures for bringing charges against individuals or entities accused of criminal wrongdoing. It also ensures the protection of society by deterring crime, promoting public safety, and rehabilitating offenders.
