Vienna Secession
Impressionism is an art movement originating in France in the late 19th century, characterized by small, thin yet visible brush strokes, open composition, emphasis on accurate depiction of light in its changing qualities (often accentuating the effects of the passage of time), ordinary subject matter, inclusion of movement as a crucial element of human perception and experience, and unusual visual angles. It is a style of painting that aims to capture the sensory effect of a scene - the impression objects make on the eye in a fleeting instant - rather than depicting details of the subject matter. Impressionist artists often worked en plein air, or outdoors, to directly observe and record natural light and color. Notable impressionist painters include Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, and Edgar Degas. Impressionism paved the way for many other art movements including expressionism, post-impressionism, and cubism.
