All-Wheel Drive (AWD) is a type of drivetrain system used in automotive vehicles, which powers all four wheels simultaneously. This system is designed to improve traction and stability, especially in adverse driving conditions such as snow, ice, or off-road terrains. AWD systems can be found in various types of vehicles including cars, SUVs, and trucks. In an AWD system, power is distributed to all four wheels through a series of components, including the transmission, transfer case, differential, and driveshafts. The transmission, which is responsible for transmitting engine power to the wheels, can be either manual or automatic. The transfer case, which is unique to 4WD and AWD systems, splits the power from the transmission and distributes it to the front and rear axles. The differential allows each wheel to rotate at a different speed, while the driveshafts transmit power from the transfer case to the wheels. AWD systems can be further classified into two categories: full-time and part-time. Full-time AWD systems provide constant power to all four wheels, while part-time AWD systems engage the rear wheels only when necessary. Some AWD systems also feature a locking differential, which locks the left and right wheels together and provides maximum traction in extreme driving conditions.
