Lyrical Abstraction is an art movement characterized by its emphasis on emotion, subjective expression, and non-objective imagery. It emerged in the postwar era as a response to the rigid structures and impersonal nature of geometric abstraction. Lyrical abstractionists sought to infuse their work with a sense of spontaneity, fluidity, and musicality, often drawing inspiration from music, poetry, and the natural world. The movement is closely associated with abstract expressionism, but whereas abstract expressionism tends to be more gestural and raw in its execution, lyrical abstraction is typically more refined and controlled. Lyrical abstractionists use color, line, and form to create evocative and atmospheric compositions that invite the viewer to explore their own emotional responses.
