Definition of Art HistoryExpressionist Art as it relates to Art, Expressionist Art, Art History

Tachisme, an art movement originating in post-World War II France, is characterized by its emphasis on spontaneous, automatic, and gestural brushwork. It is often considered a European equivalent to Abstract Expressionism, but with distinct differences in aesthetic and intent. Tachisme artists sought to express their inner emotions, subconscious thoughts, and personal experiences through freeform, abstract compositions, using color, line, and form as the primary means of communication. The resulting works are often dynamic, textured, and full of energy, reflecting the artist's emotional state and individuality. Tachisme is thus an art of subjective expression, where the creative process is as important as the final product.
