Impressionism in Art History refers to an innovative art movement originating in France in the late 19th century, which emphasized capturing the fleeting impressions and sensory effects of light and color in the natural world, rather than focusing on traditional academic subjects or techniques. Impressionist artists sought to break free from the rigid constraints of traditional painting by experimenting with loose brushstrokes, vibrant colors, and unconventional compositions, often painting en plein air (outdoors) to directly observe their subjects in natural light. This movement paved the way for numerous subsequent art movements and continues to be celebrated for its groundbreaking contributions to modern art.
