Livestock Genetics refers to the study and manipulation of genetic material in animals used for agricultural purposes, such as cattle, pigs, chickens, and sheep. It involves the use of various breeding techniques, including artificial insemination and embryo transfer, to produce offspring with desirable traits like increased milk production, faster growth rates, and disease resistance. Additionally, genetic engineering and genome editing technologies, such as CRISPR-Cas9, are being used to make targeted changes to the DNA of livestock species in order to improve their productivity, health, and welfare. This field is closely related to animal breeding, reproduction and genetics, it could include research on genetic diversity, heritability, gene mapping, genomic selection, and genetic improvement programs.
