Hailstone
Hailstone refers to a type of precipitation that consists of balls or lumps of ice that are formed within cumulonimbus clouds during thunderstorms. These ice pellets can vary in size from small pea-sized pieces to larger golf ball-sized chunks. Hailstones are created when supercooled water droplets in the clouds freeze onto condensation nuclei, such as dust or particles, and are then lifted back up into the cloud by strong updrafts. The hailstones continue to grow as they collide with other water droplets and freeze multiple times before eventually falling to the ground.
