Green Roofs

Green roofs are vegetated roof systems installed on top of buildings, designed to mimic natural landscapes. They consist of several layers, including a waterproof membrane, growing medium, and plants. These systems provide insulation, reducing heating and cooling costs, absorb rainwater, lowering stormwater runoff, and promote biodiversity by creating habitats for flora and fauna. Green roofs can be extensive, with shallow-rooted sedums or grasses, or intensive, featuring deeper soil layers that support a wider variety of plants, even trees. They offer aesthetic benefits and contribute to urban agriculture through food production and pollination. Additionally, green roofs help mitigate the urban heat island effect, improve air quality, and provide noise reduction.
