Fractional Currency
Fractional currency refers to a type of paper money issued by the United States government during the Civil War era. These notes were valued at less than one dollar and were intended to alleviate the shortage of coins in circulation. Fractional currency typically featured intricate designs and were printed in denominations such as 3 cents, 5 cents, 10 cents, 25 cents, and 50 cents. These notes were eventually phased out and replaced with coins as the economy stabilized.
