Cuban Missile Crisis
The Cuban Missile Crisis was a 13-day political and military standoff in October 1962 between the United States and the Soviet Union over the presence of Soviet ballistic missiles in Cuba. The crisis is widely regarded as the closest the Cold War came to escalating into a full-scale nuclear war. It began when American U-2 spy planes discovered the missile sites, leading to a tense period of negotiations and brinkmanship between the two superpowers. The crisis was ultimately resolved through a secret agreement in which the Soviets agreed to remove the missiles in exchange for a pledge from the U.S. not to invade Cuba and to remove American missiles from Turkey.
