Brittle Stars Life Cycles
The life cycles of brittle stars involve several stages of development, including larval forms that undergo metamorphosis into juvenile and adult brittle stars. These echinoderms reproduce sexually, with males releasing sperm into the water column to be taken up by females for fertilization. The resulting embryos develop into larvae that eventually settle on the ocean floor and undergo metamorphosis into the distinct body form of a brittle star. Growth and reproduction continue throughout the lifespan of brittle stars, with some species exhibiting regeneration abilities to replace lost limbs or damaged body parts.
