Balanced Literacy

Balanced Literacy is an instructional approach that aims to provide a comprehensive literacy education by integrating various components such as reading, writing, speaking, and listening. It emphasizes the development of both decoding skills (reading) and comprehension skills, as well as the ability to effectively communicate ideas through writing and speaking. The approach typically includes a combination of whole group instruction, small group work, independent reading and writing, and one-on-one conferencing with students to address individual needs and progress. Balanced Literacy also incorporates a variety of teaching strategies and materials to support student learning and engagement, including phonics instruction, guided reading, shared reading, interactive read-alouds, and writing workshops. This approach is designed to meet the diverse needs of students and promote literacy development across all grade levels.
