Asian SmallClawed Otters
Asian Small-clawed Otters are the smallest of all otter species, typically measuring around 70-100 cm in length and weighing between 2-5 kg. They have short, sleek brown fur with a lighter colored belly, and distinctive small, rounded claws on their paws that give them their name. These otters are native to Southeast Asia, where they can be found in freshwater wetlands, rivers, and mangrove forests. Asian Small-clawed Otters are social animals that live in family groups consisting of a monogamous pair and their offspring. They have a varied diet that includes fish, crustaceans, mollusks, and small amphibians. These otters have highly developed sensory abilities, including excellent vision and hearing, as well as sensitive whiskers that help them detect vibrations in the water. Asian Small-clawed Otters are known for their playful behavior and agility in the water. They have a unique ability to use tools, such as rocks, to break open shellfish and access their meat. However, they are also threatened by habitat loss and degradation due to human activities such as deforestation and pollution. As a result, Asian Small-clawed Otters are currently listed as vulnerable on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.
